By focusing on real-world problems, India can develop more useful and accessible AI tools that make a tangible difference in people's lives.

For years, the narrative surrounding AI has been one of awe towards the technology itself. Brilliant advancements in self-driving cars, robotic assistants, and ever-more-complex algorithms have captured the headlines.

However, a crucial question has emerged: Are we building technology for the sake of progress, or are we shaping technology to address the most pressing challenges faced by humanity?

This question takes on a new urgency in the context of India. Often viewed through the lens of its rich culture or booming economy, India presents a unique opportunity for AI development. Here, a revolutionary vision is taking shape – Adbhut India, a future where India leads the world in AI, not by chasing technological marvels, but by building solutions driven by human needs.

It's about tackling real-world problems, using AI as a tool to empower the vast and diverse population it aspires to serve. This shift in perspective – from technology shaping humanity to humanity shaping technology – is precisely what makes India a potential leader in the next wave of AI innovation.

Why India?

India presents a compelling case for this approach – one driven by real-world needs. The sheer scale of challenges India faces across various sectors creates a fertile ground for innovation.

India’s untapped potential:

India faces a multitude of complex issues across diverse sectors. From streamlining agriculture and growing rural economies to revamping healthcare delivery and bridging the educational divide, the sheer volume and variety of these challenges present a unique opportunity. India has a real-world testing ground for practical applications.

The unique language landscape:

One of India's challenges lies in its linguistic landscape. With hundreds of spoken languages and a significant non-literate population, traditional AI models often struggle to bridge the communication gap.

Traditional AI models, often designed for single languages and high literacy rates, struggle to address these realities. India can turn this challenge into an opportunity for innovation. AI-powered language translation tools can bridge the communication gap, while vernacular language learning platforms can empower millions to access information and education.

India’s young demographic:

India boasts a demographic unlike any other – a young, tech-savvy population comfortable with mobile technology and eager to adopt new solutions. Their familiarity with digital platforms like UPI and DigiLocker creates a fertile ground for AI implementation. This large demographic is not just eager to consume AI solutions, but also holds the potential to become the next generation of AI innovators.

India’s stackable potential

India's journey towards AI leadership isn't starting from scratch. We have already established a robust digital public infrastructure that serves as a springboard for innovation. Existing initiatives like UPI, the world’s most frequently used digital payments platform demonstrate India's ability to successfully implement large-scale technological solutions.

This existing infrastructure becomes even more powerful when coupled with the concept of "stackable AI."

Imagine AI solutions not as monolithic giants, but as modular building blocks. Each innovation builds upon the successes of the previous one, creating an interconnected ecosystem.

Think of an AI-powered agricultural tool that seamlessly integrates with a farmer's existing digital payment platform, or where a healthcare diagnostic tool leverages a secure patient data storage system like DigiLocker.

In this way, India can leverage its existing digital public infrastructure as the foundation, and then stack layer upon layer of new AI solutions, each one addressing a specific need and contributing to the overall goal of an Adbhut India.

A use-case first approach to AI in India

India's path to leadership lies in a use-case-led strategy. This means prioritizing AI solutions that directly address the nation's specific challenges. By focusing on solving real-world problems, India can develop smaller, more accessible AI tools that make a tangible difference in people's lives.

The vision of Adbhut India, a future where India shapes AI for its own needs and emerges as a global leader, is an ambitious one. It requires a collective effort, a nationwide movement that brings together diverse stakeholders. Here's how we can achieve this:

  • A use case driven approach: Instead of top-down directives, let's identify challenges at the local level. This means actively engaging with stakeholders across diverse sectors – farmers, educators, healthcare professionals – to identify their specific challenges. This approach ensures AI solutions directly address real-world problems faced by Indian citizens. Once successful use cases are established, they can be championed and potentially integrated into national AI policy.

  • A community of innovators: No single entity holds all the answers. India's diverse AI ecosystem thrives on collaboration. This means fostering connections between researchers at top universities, developers building cutting-edge AI solutions, entrepreneurs brimming with innovative ideas, and policymakers crafting a responsible regulatory framework. By facilitating knowledge exchange, mentorship programs, and industry events, we aim to create an ecosystem where ideas can flourish and challenges can be tackled collectively.

  • Celebrating homegrown success: India has a vibrant startup scene with a growing number of AI-focused ventures. Highlighting these success stories serves a dual purpose. First, it inspires others to contribute to the Adbhut India vision. Second, it showcases the potential of Indian talent on the global stage, attracting further investment in this field.

  • Building in public: We champion the development and sharing of public goods – foundational AI tools and resources that are freely accessible to all. This ensures that the benefits of AI extend far beyond a select few, fostering a truly inclusive and democratic AI landscape.
