What is the (A)I Promise?

It's a self-declared pledge by AI developers and companies to their users, to specify the ethical guidelines they promise to follow. No jargon. Just clear promises made by an organisation, as commitments to its users.

In the (A)I Promise approach, regulations can be bottom-up, agile and iterative. They can be updated more frequently, and align the incentives of AI builders to Consumers more.

The (A)I promise is like a badge of honor for developers who prioritize their users. It's totally optional, allowing developers to opt in if they want. This promise is a straightforward way for developers to declare their commitment to user satisfaction through their actions.

1. Clarify User Expectations from your Product

As a starting point, we have identified the following six (6) key user expectations from AI products and services that have emerged from our interactions. These are by no means exhaustive, and we would love to hear feedback on what other expectations should be added to this list. We also acknowledge that not all of these apply to all kinds of products, and developers can identify the ones that apply to their service.

  1. Define Developer Actions

2. These expectations let us define Developer Actions

Depending on the industry and service, developers can pinpoint the actions they're taking. This section is meant for open-ended responses to build a collection of solutions that different developers might be working on. We envision this growing into a valuable resource for the industry, speeding up the deployment of solutions over time.

  1. Generate and share the (A)I Promise

Based on the inputs provided by the developer an (A)I promise text is generated. The language at the moment is standard and only takes into account if an action is being taken or not and does not provide a degree of commitment. However, over time we hope to evolve the language to reflect different nuances.

We are looking for feedback on the language as well as structure. Write to us to share your views.

AI Builders

Organisations building AI models would be able to communicate which principles and data they can protect for consumers.

Consumers

Consumers of AI Products in India would have a clear, transparent and a no-jargon understanding of how their rights and information is protected.

Policy Makers

Policy makers in India (and around the world) would have a better grasp of the rights that citizens want to be protected and organisations are protecting themselves.

We will iteratively improve the (A)I Promise framework with these principles in mind.

Centered around the Consumer

We are modelling a "citizen's charter". All the promises are centered around these rights mentioned in the citizen's charter.

Inspired by Creative Commons Approach

Our approach is modelled around the Creative Commons licensing model with different licenses generated for different works of copyright. All decided by the creator and transparent to the consumer.

Designed as an Iterative Process

No regulation is perfect. Even self-regulation. We aim to continously work with the market to evolve this framework.

About Us

The (A)I Promise is an initiative of the Policy Working Group at People+ai. We hope to create a space for debate and discussion on policies, guidelines and regulations around AI in India. Supporting responsible innovation and experimentation in ways useful to India and Indians.

The group defines policy to be broader than just laws and regulations and focuses on the role the industry can play in creating better user outcomes. With a recognition that the government has a significant role to play in shaping the market and driving the inclusion agenda.

The group is focussing on three questions:

  1. How can AI developers and entrepreneurs better respond to user needs and policymaker’s concerns?

  2. How can the government support a vibrant AI ecosystem in India?

  3. How do existing sectoral laws in health, agriculture, finance etc. intersect with AI use and deployment?

The (A)I Promise is a workstream that emerged from Question 1. That explores how developers can better respond to user needs. It will be a priority for the group in the near term. If the idea of developing a self governance code for AI excites you, write to us at
